“I noticed that the pay-as-you-go option does not appear in the plan listings on esimdb, which caught my attention a little. After actually using it, I personally feel this is the most convenient option.

Because it is fully usage based, you can keep using it seamlessly even when moving between countries, which is incredibly convenient. With cheaper flight tickets, long layovers at airports in China are common, and sometimes you may want to head into the city for a short while. In those situations, it feels a bit wasteful to purchase a one day plan or a large data package, so this option fits perfectly.

Airport WiFi is available, of course, but connections can be unstable, and SMS verification is sometimes required, which often makes it more troublesome than expected. That is why having the reassurance of being able to connect immediately on your own mobile line, even during immigration, feels very valuable.

Overseas roaming is also available with ahamo and Rakuten Mobile, but there are still countries that are not covered. Having this set up as a dual SIM feels like something that could really help in an emergency. I also appreciate that LINE and WhatsApp continue to work even after the main data allowance has been used up. It is a small detail, but genuinely useful.”

MTX Connect Macau

“I wanted to use it in Hong Kong and used it on my iPhone 11 Pro.
It connected to 3 Macau.
3 Macau itself had good coverage and signal, but the MTX environment was very poor, with a ping of over 1 second. It was almost impossible to connect. (However, the amount of traffic on the app was being consumed...)”

Macau Travel eSIM FAQ

Everything you need to know about using eSIMs in Macau

How many travel eSIM brands (providers) are available for use in Macau, and how many prepaid data plans are there?

There are more than 210 travel eSIM providers and over 14, 900 prepaid data plans available for Macau. With such a wide variety of options, travelers can easily find an eSIM that suits their needs.

Are there any unlimited data eSIM plans available for Macau?

Unlimited data eSIM plans are available for Macau from several providers. These include ASIMGO, Roamify, abesteSIM, MicroEsim, Earth Esim, Giga.Tel, esimzon, and Yesim. All of the plans allow tethering and are subject to speed throttling; some specify speed limits of 1 Mbps, 5 Mbps, or 10 Mbps. Prices for unlimited data plans range from roughly $2.45 to $25.16 USD, depending on the provider and validity period. Travelers should consider their data usage and the potential speed limits when selecting a plan.

What are the major mobile networks available for a travel eSIM in Macau?

In Macau, the primary Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) providing mobile services are:

CTM (Companhia de Telecomunicações de Macau): Offers extensive 4G LTE coverage across Macau, providing a range of mobile services including voice, data, and international roaming.
China Telecom (Macau): Provides mobile services with a focus on data and voice offerings, utilizing both CDMA and LTE technologies.
Hutchison Telephone (Macau) Limited (3 Macau): Operates under the "3" brand, offering 4G LTE services with coverage in major areas, including hotels, casinos, and business districts.

As of November 2024, SmarTone (Macau) has ceased its operations in Macau.

Macau does not have Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs); therefore, all mobile services are provided directly by the aforementioned MNOs.

Can I get a travel eSIM with a phone number and SMS for Macau?

Travel eSIM plans that include a phone number and SMS support are available for Macau. Providers such as GlobaleSIM, ESIM.DOG, JamboSim, Roamify, Airhub, and Simbye offer plans that give you a virtual phone number with inbound and outbound voice and SMS services. The phone numbers issued on these plans come from other countries (for example, +1, +33, +376, and +61) rather than the local Macau code +853, so they do not appear as local Macau numbers in the native dialing system.

If your use case requires a number that displays as a local Macau number, no such plans are listed in the current data set. Travelers who need local coverage can still rely on data‑only eSIMs and use VoIP or messaging apps that are functional in Macau, keeping in mind that some apps may be blocked or restricted and should be verified before purchase.
