Sweden Travel eSIM FAQ

Everything you need to know about using eSIMs in Sweden

How many travel eSIM brands (providers) are available for use in Sweden, and how many prepaid data plans are there?

There are more than 220 travel eSIM providers and over 17, 300 prepaid data plans available for Sweden, offering a wide variety of options that make it easy for travelers to find an eSIM that suits their needs.

Are there any unlimited data eSIM plans available for Sweden?

Unlimited data eSIM options are available for travelers heading to Sweden. Several providers such as Earth Esim, ASIMGO, Roamify, abesteSIM, MicroEsim, Yesim, EtravelSIM, esimzon, SparkRoam, Numero eSIM, and Orange Travel offer fully unlimited data plans, though the speed can be limited and is often throttled after a certain data threshold or by local network conditions. For instance, some plans cap initial speeds at 1 Mbps, 5 Mbps, or 10 Mbps, with the possibility that speeds decrease during usage. Prices for these unlimited packages vary from as low as about $1.49 to roughly $22.99, giving travelers a wide range to choose from, depending on desired validity period and network speed. All of these plans allow tethering, which is useful for sharing data across multiple devices. When selecting a plan, consider the expected data needs, desired speed, and the length of stay to find the most suitable option.

What are the major mobile networks available for a travel eSIM in Sweden?

Sweden's mobile network infrastructure is supported by several major Mobile Network Operators (MNOs):

Telia: The largest operator in Sweden, offering extensive 4G and 5G coverage nationwide.
Tele2: Provides comprehensive 4G and expanding 5G services, covering a significant portion of the population.
Telenor: Offers widespread 4G and growing 5G coverage, serving a large customer base across the country.
3 Sweden (Hi3G Access): Focuses on urban areas with robust 4G and developing 5G networks.

In addition to these MNOs, Sweden hosts several Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs). MVNOs provide mobile services by leasing access from major carriers. Examples include Hallon, which operates on the 3 network, and Comviq, owned by Tele2. It's important to note that most travel eSIMs rely on MNO infrastructure rather than MVNOs.

Can I get a travel eSIM with a phone number and SMS for Sweden?

Yes, there are travel eSIM plans that provide an active phone number and SMS capability for use while you are in Sweden. Providers that supply a local Swedish number—including inbound and outbound voice and SMS—include Stixrs and RedEx eSIM, both of which list the dialing code +46. These plans give you a fully functional Swedish phone number that you can use for calls and texts within the country.

Other travel eSIM providers such as GlobaleSIM and various Roamify packages also offer plans with a phone number and SMS, but the number comes with foreign dialing codes (for example +1 or +33) and is therefore not a local Swedish number, although SMS capability remains available. Prices for plans that include a local Swedish number generally start around $15 and can rise with higher data volumes and longer validity periods.
