“Pre-installed Nomad eSIM on a 10GB/30day plan. Activation at the Guangzhou airport after a 15 hr flight was bit challenging. I used the combination of Airport Wi-Fi & Firsty Tier 1 Free Basic to bootstrap start Nomad. Provisioning and activatin took less than 5 minutes max. Nomad has implied VPN features, so to really use the cellular connection service provided by partner China Telecom, under Settings I disabled wi-fi in my iPhone 16 and primary SIM. I was able to access 90% of my Apps (normally blocked: YT, FB, WhatsApp, Outlook emails, Gmails, etc.). Some locations even with signals at 4-bars, both eSIMs appeared not working, that is the network connection issues and not the eSIM's fault. Overall very satisfied with Nomad (paid) DL upto 90Mbs and Firsty (free) 230Kbs as backup.”
Nomad does not provide a truly unlimited data eSIM for China. All plans that carry the word “Unlimited” in their name give 2GB of high‑speed data per day; after that amount the speed drops to 1000 kbps. If you need more data, Nomad offers fixed‑data alternatives such as a 50GB plan for 45 days or a 30GB plan for 365 days. Choosing a fixed‑data plan can be more cost‑effective for travelers who use a lot of data.
Nomad does not provide China eSIM plans that include a phone number or SMS capability. All of Nomad’s China offerings are data‑only, meaning they grant high‑speed internet access without support for traditional voice calls or text messages.
Travelers can still communicate by using VoIP services such as WhatsApp, Telegram or iMessage, which work over the data connection provided by the eSIM.
Nomad offers 10 single‑country plans and 31 multi‑country plans for data use in China. The single‑country options range roughly from 1 GB to 10 GB of data and are priced between about $4 and $40, while the multi‑country plans provide between 1 GB and 20 GB and span a price range of roughly $10 to $170. These selections give travelers flexibility depending on how long they plan to stay and how much data they expect to need.
