I tested Ubigi (5G) and TravelKon (Docomo IIJ) (LTE only).
Both have Japan IP address.
But TravelKon is faster ping (45ms) instead of Ubigi (120ms) even on 5G.
TravelKon (Docomo IIJ) is recommended.
Was very happy with service. 5G phone connected at 5G. One of the few options in Japan that will do that. Most roaming services won't and a lot of other prepaid providers won't.
Service was 4G rather than 5G but speeds were perfectly fine, even for real-time navigation. The few low numbers recorded in speed tests were almost all at Narita Airport.
10 GB each turned out to be plenty for 9 days in Tokyo. We did connect our phones to the hotel's WiFi but probably didn't need to.
Works great! Good coverage (docomo network it seems), Japanese IP, and good ping times to Europe. Used with an iPhone XS on LTE. Attached Speedtest is from a train
It was great value for money for my trip to Japan. Very simple app.
I only regret one thing: not having known about it sooner!
Very poor experience. My data would be spotty at best, even with full bars. Certain websites would not load, sometimes Facebook and Instagram would not load. My email would only sometimes work. WhatsApp would seldomly send.
Not recommended.
Good & solid experience! Balance, refill & plans via the website! Good 4G data speeds in japan (15-20mbps)!
Ubigi does not provide an unlimited data eSIM plan for Japan. The provider offers fixed‑data options instead, such as a 60GB plan valid for 30 days that costs $49.00 USD, another 60GB plan for $66.00 USD, and a 60GB “BEST ASIA” plan for $78.00 USD that also covers other Asian countries. Choosing a fixed data plan can be more cost‑effective unless you are an extremely heavy data consumer.
Ubigi does not provide a Japan eSIM with a phone number or SMS capability. The available plans are data‑only, so travelers cannot receive or send text messages or make calls through a traditional phone number. However, popular VoIP applications such as WhatsApp, Telegram, and iMessage can be used over the data connection for voice calls and messaging.
Ubigi offers a total of 17 single‑country plans and 27 multi‑country plans that cover Japan. The plans vary in price from about $2.00 to $240.00 and in data allowance from roughly 500 MB up to 60 GB, with validity periods ranging from one day to one year.
