I tested Ubigi (5G) and TravelKon (Docomo IIJ) (LTE only).
Both have Japan IP address.
But TravelKon is faster ping (45ms) instead of Ubigi (120ms) even on 5G.
TravelKon (Docomo IIJ) is recommended.
Was very happy with service. 5G phone connected at 5G. One of the few options in Japan that will do that. Most roaming services won't and a lot of other prepaid providers won't.
Service was 4G rather than 5G but speeds were perfectly fine, even for real-time navigation. The few low numbers recorded in speed tests were almost all at Narita Airport.
10 GB each turned out to be plenty for 9 days in Tokyo. We did connect our phones to the hotel's WiFi but probably didn't need to.
Works great! Good coverage (docomo network it seems), Japanese IP, and good ping times to Europe. Used with an iPhone XS on LTE. Attached Speedtest is from a train
It was great value for money for my trip to Japan. Very simple app.
I only regret one thing: not having known about it sooner!
Very poor experience. My data would be spotty at best, even with full bars. Certain websites would not load, sometimes Facebook and Instagram would not load. My email would only sometimes work. WhatsApp would seldomly send.
Not recommended.
Good & solid experience! Balance, refill & plans via the website! Good 4G data speeds in japan (15-20mbps)!
Ubigi does not provide an unlimited data eSIM plan for Japan. The available options are fixed‑data plans with limits such as 60GB for 30 days at $49.00 USD or 60GB for 30 days at $66.00 USD, and another 60GB plan for $78.00 USD that also covers 15 additional countries. A 50GB plan for 30 days costs $55.00 USD and is strictly limited to Japan cable.
Because there are no unlimited plans, travelers who want higher capacity can choose from these fixed‑data alternatives. For most users, a fixed plan can be more cost‑effective than paying for an unlimited plan, especially if the data usage does not exceed the capped amount. Only travelers with very heavy data demands might consider other providers that offer truly unlimited options.
Ubigi does not provide a Japan eSIM that includes a phone number or SMS capability. The plans they offer for Japan are data‑only, allowing high‑speed internet access but not traditional voice or text services. Travelers can use popular VoIP applications such as WhatsApp, Telegram, and iMessage over the data connection for calls and messaging.
Ubigi provides 16 single‑country data plans that cover Japan, in addition to 28 multi‑country plans that include Japan among several destinations. The available plans span a price range from $2 to $220 and a data cap range from 500 MB up to 60 GB, offering a mix of short‑term daily or weekly offerings as well as longer‑term monthly options.
