“I tested Ubigi (5G) and TravelKon (Docomo IIJ) (LTE only).
Both have Japan IP address.
But TravelKon is faster ping (45ms) instead of Ubigi (120ms) even on 5G.
TravelKon (Docomo IIJ) is recommended. ”
“Was very happy with service. 5G phone connected at 5G. One of the few options in Japan that will do that. Most roaming services won't and a lot of other prepaid providers won't.”
“Service was 4G rather than 5G but speeds were perfectly fine, even for real-time navigation. The few low numbers recorded in speed tests were almost all at Narita Airport.
10 GB each turned out to be plenty for 9 days in Tokyo. We did connect our phones to the hotel's WiFi but probably didn't need to.”
“Works great! Good coverage (docomo network it seems), Japanese IP, and good ping times to Europe. Used with an iPhone XS on LTE. Attached Speedtest is from a train”
“It was great value for money for my trip to Japan. Very simple app.
I only regret one thing: not having known about it sooner!”
“Very poor experience. My data would be spotty at best, even with full bars. Certain websites would not load, sometimes Facebook and Instagram would not load. My email would only sometimes work. WhatsApp would seldomly send.
Not recommended.”
“Good & solid experience! Balance, refill & plans via the website! Good 4G data speeds in japan (15-20mbps)!”
There are no truly unlimited data eSIM plans for Japan offered by Ubigi.
Ubigi’s available plans are fixed‑data packages, the most generous of which provide 60 GB for 30 days. These plans come with a reduced speed of 2000 kbps and use the 5G network. If your data usage is high, a fixed‑data plan such as the 60 GB option may be more cost‑effective than a limited‑data alternative.
Ubigi does not provide any eSIM plans for Japan that include a phone number or SMS capability. All of Ubigi’s offerings for Japan are data‑only plans, so travelers will not receive an incoming or outgoing voice or text feature.
Because of this, users must rely on internet‑based applications such as WhatsApp, Telegram, or iMessage for calls and messaging. These VoIP services work over the data connection that the Ubigi eSIM provides, allowing communication without a traditional phone number.
Ubigi lists 15 single‑country data options for Japan and 39 multi‑country options that include Japan. Most of the single‑country plans are fixed data bundles ranging from 500 MB to 10 GB, while the multi‑country lists often mix fixed‑data bundles with daily‑based data caps that can be purchased for a set number of days. Prices across the catalog range from about $2.00 up to $440.00, offering a broad spread of data values from the 500 MB smallest to the 60 GB largest caps.
