“I tested Ubigi (5G) and TravelKon (Docomo IIJ) (LTE only).
Both have Japan IP address.
But TravelKon is faster ping (45ms) instead of Ubigi (120ms) even on 5G.
TravelKon (Docomo IIJ) is recommended. ”
“Was very happy with service. 5G phone connected at 5G. One of the few options in Japan that will do that. Most roaming services won't and a lot of other prepaid providers won't.”
“Service was 4G rather than 5G but speeds were perfectly fine, even for real-time navigation. The few low numbers recorded in speed tests were almost all at Narita Airport.
10 GB each turned out to be plenty for 9 days in Tokyo. We did connect our phones to the hotel's WiFi but probably didn't need to.”
“Works great! Good coverage (docomo network it seems), Japanese IP, and good ping times to Europe. Used with an iPhone XS on LTE. Attached Speedtest is from a train”
“It was great value for money for my trip to Japan. Very simple app.
I only regret one thing: not having known about it sooner!”
“Very poor experience. My data would be spotty at best, even with full bars. Certain websites would not load, sometimes Facebook and Instagram would not load. My email would only sometimes work. WhatsApp would seldomly send.
Not recommended.”
“Good & solid experience! Balance, refill & plans via the website! Good 4G data speeds in japan (15-20mbps)!”
Ubigi does not offer an unlimited data eSIM plan for Japan. The available options are fixed data plans, such as a 200GB plan valid for 360 days or a 100GB plan also valid for 360 days, both available at $290.00 or $190.00 USD respectively. A smaller 60GB monthly plan is also offered for 30 days. These fixed data plans provide a clear data ceiling and validity period, and they can be more cost‑effective for travelers who do not require an unlimited data allowance.
Ubigi does not provide a Japan eSIM plan that includes a phone number or SMS functionality. Only data‑only eSIMs are sold for Japan, so travelers cannot receive inbound or outbound voice calls or text messages directly from the network. If calls or messaging are needed, users can rely on internet‑based VoIP applications such as WhatsApp, Telegram or iMessage over the data connection; however, availability of these services can be limited in some areas, so travelers should verify that the apps they intend to use are accessible in Japan before purchasing.
Ubigi offers a total of 15 single‑country plans and 44 multi‑country plans for Japan. The available plans span data caps from 500 MB up to 200 GB, with prices ranging roughly from $2 to $390, providing a wide range of options for travelers depending on their data needs.
