“I tested Ubigi (5G) and TravelKon (Docomo IIJ) (LTE only).
Both have Japan IP address.
But TravelKon is faster ping (45ms) instead of Ubigi (120ms) even on 5G.
TravelKon (Docomo IIJ) is recommended. ”
“Was very happy with service. 5G phone connected at 5G. One of the few options in Japan that will do that. Most roaming services won't and a lot of other prepaid providers won't.”
“Service was 4G rather than 5G but speeds were perfectly fine, even for real-time navigation. The few low numbers recorded in speed tests were almost all at Narita Airport.
10 GB each turned out to be plenty for 9 days in Tokyo. We did connect our phones to the hotel's WiFi but probably didn't need to.”
“Works great! Good coverage (docomo network it seems), Japanese IP, and good ping times to Europe. Used with an iPhone XS on LTE. Attached Speedtest is from a train”
“It was great value for money for my trip to Japan. Very simple app.
I only regret one thing: not having known about it sooner!”
“Very poor experience. My data would be spotty at best, even with full bars. Certain websites would not load, sometimes Facebook and Instagram would not load. My email would only sometimes work. WhatsApp would seldomly send.
Not recommended.”
“Good & solid experience! Balance, refill & plans via the website! Good 4G data speeds in japan (15-20mbps)!”
No, Ubigi does not provide unlimited data eSIM plans for Japan. The eSIM provider only offers fixed‑data packages. For travelers needing Japan coverage, Ubigi sells 60GB packages that are valid for 30 days, with prices ranging from $45 to $66 per 30‑day period and a reduced speed of 2000 kbps. Larger‑allowance options include the 60GB “BEST ASIA” package at $66 and the “BEST WORLD” 60GB plan for $149. Choosing a fixed‑data plan is generally more cost‑effective unless a traveler requires extremely high data usage.
Ubigi does not provide a Japan eSIM that includes a phone number or SMS capability. The plans they offer for Japan are data‑only, allowing high‑speed internet access but not traditional voice or text services. Travelers can use popular VoIP applications such as WhatsApp, Telegram, and iMessage over the data connection for calls and messaging.
Ubigi provides 15 single‑country data plans that cover Japan only, and 38 multi‑country plans that include Japan as part of a larger regional package. The single‑country options range in price from roughly $2 to $210 and in data from 500 MB up to 60 GB, with validity periods from 1 to 365 days. Multi‑country packages offer a similar breadth of price and data ranges, allowing travelers to choose plans that suit short‑term daily needs or longer‑term bulk data requirements.
