I tested Ubigi (5G) and TravelKon (Docomo IIJ) (LTE only).
Both have Japan IP address.
But TravelKon is faster ping (45ms) instead of Ubigi (120ms) even on 5G.
TravelKon (Docomo IIJ) is recommended.
Was very happy with service. 5G phone connected at 5G. One of the few options in Japan that will do that. Most roaming services won't and a lot of other prepaid providers won't.
Service was 4G rather than 5G but speeds were perfectly fine, even for real-time navigation. The few low numbers recorded in speed tests were almost all at Narita Airport.
10 GB each turned out to be plenty for 9 days in Tokyo. We did connect our phones to the hotel's WiFi but probably didn't need to.
Works great! Good coverage (docomo network it seems), Japanese IP, and good ping times to Europe. Used with an iPhone XS on LTE. Attached Speedtest is from a train
It was great value for money for my trip to Japan. Very simple app.
I only regret one thing: not having known about it sooner!
Very poor experience. My data would be spotty at best, even with full bars. Certain websites would not load, sometimes Facebook and Instagram would not load. My email would only sometimes work. WhatsApp would seldomly send.
Not recommended.
Good & solid experience! Balance, refill & plans via the website! Good 4G data speeds in japan (15-20mbps)!
Ubigi does not provide an unlimited data eSIM plan for Japan.
The current offerings for Japan feature a fixed data allowance of 60GB for a validity period of 30 days. For example, Ubigi sells a 60GB plan for 30 days on 5G at $45.00 USD, a 60GB plan on 5G for $65.00 USD, and the BEST ASIA 60GB plan for $66.00 USD, all of which include a reduced speed of 2000kbps. These plans are available exclusively in Japan and are the only high‑capacity options listed for the country.
Choosing a fixed data plan can be more cost‑effective for most travelers, especially if the expected data usage falls within the 60GB limit. An unlimited plan would only be suitable for extremely heavy users, but such a plan is not currently offered by Ubigi for Japan.
Ubigi does not provide a Japan eSIM that includes a phone number or SMS capability. The plans they offer for Japan are data‑only, allowing high‑speed internet access but not traditional voice or text services. Travelers can use popular VoIP applications such as WhatsApp, Telegram, and iMessage over the data connection for calls and messaging.
Ubigi offers 15 single‑country data plans that cover Japan and 38 multi‑country plans that include Japan. The plans are split into fixed data cap offerings—where a set amount of data is supplied for the duration of the validity period—and daily data cap options, which reset each day. Overall, plan prices range from about $2 to $210, and data caps span from 500 MB to 60 GB.
