“I tested Ubigi (5G) and TravelKon (Docomo IIJ) (LTE only).
Both have Japan IP address.
But TravelKon is faster ping (45ms) instead of Ubigi (120ms) even on 5G.
TravelKon (Docomo IIJ) is recommended. ”
“Was very happy with service. 5G phone connected at 5G. One of the few options in Japan that will do that. Most roaming services won't and a lot of other prepaid providers won't.”
“Service was 4G rather than 5G but speeds were perfectly fine, even for real-time navigation. The few low numbers recorded in speed tests were almost all at Narita Airport.
10 GB each turned out to be plenty for 9 days in Tokyo. We did connect our phones to the hotel's WiFi but probably didn't need to.”
“Works great! Good coverage (docomo network it seems), Japanese IP, and good ping times to Europe. Used with an iPhone XS on LTE. Attached Speedtest is from a train”
“It was great value for money for my trip to Japan. Very simple app.
I only regret one thing: not having known about it sooner!”
“Very poor experience. My data would be spotty at best, even with full bars. Certain websites would not load, sometimes Facebook and Instagram would not load. My email would only sometimes work. WhatsApp would seldomly send.
Not recommended.”
“Good & solid experience! Balance, refill & plans via the website! Good 4G data speeds in japan (15-20mbps)!”
Ubigi does not provide an unlimited data eSIM plan for Japan. Its available plans for Japan are fixed‑data offerings, such as a 60GB plan valid for 30 days that costs $45.00 USD. Another 60GB plan with the same validity is priced at $65.00 USD. For users who need high data allowances but do not require unlimited usage, these fixed‑data plans can be more cost‑effective. Heavy data consumers may want to explore alternative providers or higher‑cap plans if they require more usage than 60GB.
Ubigi does not provide an eSIM for Japan that includes a phone number or SMS capability. The only plans available for Japan are data‑only eSIMs. Travelers who need voice or text messaging can use VoIP applications such as WhatsApp, Telegram or iMessage over the data connection, which work without a traditional phone number.
Ubigi provides 15 single‑country data plans and 39 multi‑country plans that are valid for use in Japan. The available plans span a price range from about $2 to $440, with data caps between roughly 500 MB and 60 GB and validity periods that can go from a single day up to a full year. Some of the plans feature a reduced speed cap of 2 Mbps for a portion of the data.
