I live in Portugal and travel frequently, so using an eSIM provider seemed like the logical choice. Among the many options available, I chose Airalo for its competitive packages. Initially, the service worked as advertised for about a month, but since then, I’ve faced nothing but persistent and infuriating issues.
It appears that national networks have blocked Airalo from connecting, rendering the service practically useless. Unfortunately, Airalo’s support has been utterly unhelpful. Despite countless support tickets, messages, and screenshots, there has been no resolution.
What’s worse, Airalo refuses to provide a refund, instead forcing customers to accept Airalo credit. This so-called “credit” is completely worthless to me since their service does not work.
This has been a massive waste of time and productivity, especially since I rely heavily on mobile data for my work. The lack of accountability and support from Airalo is both frustrating and unacceptable.
I strongly advise anyone considering Airalo to avoid them at all costs and look for more reliable alternatives. Do not waste your money or your time.
Fast 5G speeds in Madeira, Portugal (and the airport in Lisbon). Only downside is you can't check data usage — though with 30GBs for our seven-day trip we didn't really need to.
Airalo does not offer a truly unlimited high‑speed data eSIM for Portugal. The only plan with “Unlimited” in its name is the Eurolink – Unlimited, which delivers 3GB/day of high‑speed data for 10 days and then throttles speed to 1000kbps; it still has a data cap. Travelers who need more data can choose fixed‑cap plans such as Eurolink – 100 GB for 180 days at $185.00 USD or Fofo Mobil – 80 GB for 30 days at $49.00 USD, both of which provide high‑speed 5G and, in the case of Eurolink, LTE coverage across Portugal and 41 additional countries. Choosing a fixed data plan can be more cost effective for most users, unless they are extremely heavy data consumers.
Airalo provides six single‑country data plans that are applicable only to Portugal and an additional 27 multi‑country plans that include Portugal along with other destinations. Across these package options the cost varies from roughly a dollar‑and‑a‑half to about one hundred eighty‑five dollars, while the data allowance ranges from one gigabyte all the way up to a hundred gigabytes. The validity of the plans can be as short as seven days or extend up to a full year. Most of the offerings carry a fixed data cap, although one plan provides a daily data cap instead.
